1. Hypometabolism in land snails: Controlled or passive phenomenon?

چکیده

Hypometabolism in land snails is an adaptive mechanism enabling survival in unfavourable environmental conditions such as the cold, frost, heat and drought. Both estivation and winter torpor are evoked by changes in ambient temperature, and humidity. Moreover, winter torpor is evoked by a decrease in photoperiod. But there is a growing body of evidence that maintenance in hypometabolic state and arousal from the torpor is under endogenous control, which prevents cell injury induced by extracellular freezing in winter and oxidative stress in both winter and summer. Hypometabolism in land snails is associated with molecular changes such as gene expression, selective inhibition of some protein synthesis, and changes in activities of same enzymes.

Parallel evolution of passive and active defence in land snails

Predator-prey interactions are major processes promoting phenotypic evolution. However, it remains unclear how predation causes morphological and behavioural diversity in prey species and how it might lead to speciation. Here, we show that substantial divergence in the phenotypic traits of prey species has occurred among closely related land snails as a result of adaptation to predator attacks....

Land snail models in island biogeography: A tale of two snails*[]

Oceanic islands have long been important in evolutionary biology. Land snails are a major component of oceanic island biotas and have much to offer as systems for addressing major questions in evolution and biogeography. We review patterns of within-archipelago biogeography and diversifi cation in two large Hawaiian land snail groups, the Succineidae and the Achatinellinae. Molecular studies su...

Synopsis The conquest of land has endowed air-breathers with the capability to utilize ventilation not only to acquire oxygen but also to control blood and intracellular acid-base state. Hypercapnic acidosis (resulting from ventilatory control and/or behavioral choice), thus, has become a universal component of hypometabolic states in air-breathers, with inhibitory and/or protective roles. Here...

Snails and trematode infection after Indian Ocean tsunami in Phang-Nga Province, southern Thailand.

The tsunami and non-tsunami affected areas of Takua Pa District, Phang-Nga Province were investigated for fresh- and brackish-water snails that transmit human parasitic diseases during 2006 and 2007. Among 46 snail species found, 17 species of 8 families were freshwater snails, 28 species of another 7 families were brackish-water snails, and 1 species was a land snail. Of these species, 11 fres...
